This morning, Trump denigrated the dignity of a White House visit honoring Navajo code talkers by attempting to make fun of Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) by calling her Pocahontas.

Following a wave of public backlash, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders opted to defend Trump’s racial slur on a sitting member of the United States Senate.
“I think what most people find offensive is Senator Warren lying about her heritage to advance her career,” Sanders told reporters.
It should be noted that throughout Warren’s career, while she had on occasion alluded to the fact that she is partly of Native American heritage, it was never a factor in determining employment. In fact, Trump’s insistence that she perverted her application to acquire her previous job at Harvard was thoroughly debunked.
The Herald has twice quoted Charles Fried, the head of the Harvard appointing committee that recommended Warren for her position in 1995, saying that the Democratic candidate’s heritage didn’t come up during the course of her hiring. “It simply played no role in the appointments process,” he said. “It was not mentioned and I didn’t mention it to the faculty.”
The Herald later quoted Fried, a former U.S. Solicitor General under President Ronald Reagan, saying, “I can state categorically that the subject of her Native American ancestry never once was mentioned.”
Regardless, the fact that Trump or his White House would stoop to deriding a member of the United States Senate for a cheap laugh – which he didn’t even manage – is classless, tacky, and leagues beneath the dignity of the office of the president.
Warren herself effectively summed up the petulance of Trump’s remark.
“This was supposed to be an event to honor heroes, people who put it all on the line for our country, and people who because of their incredible work, saved countless lives. … It is deeply unfortunate that the President of the United States cannot even make it through a ceremony honoring these heroes without having to throw out a racial slur.”
“Donald Trump does this over and over thinking somehow he’s going to shut me up with it. It didn’t work in the past and it’s not going to work in the future.”
Trump may resort to playground bullying tactics, but he is in over his head with this week’s feud with Senator Warren. The brilliant progressive icon is chomping at the bit to spar with the embattled President, and his petty attack may just have given her the platform she’s been seeking to wipe the floor with him.
