Considering that the Republicans just passed a massive tax break for billionaires and major corporations, the government must have a pretty big surplus of money. However, the GOP has refused to reauthorize funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which expired on September 30th. CHIP provided healthcare for nine million low-income children and pregnant women.
How could they have missed this crucial deadline? Well, they didn’t. According to Sen. Orrin Hatch (UT), they can’t afford it:

But let me tell you something. We’re going to do CHIP, there’s no question about it in my mind. It has to be done the right way. But we—the reason CHIP is having trouble is because we don’t have money anymore. We just add more and more spending and more and more spending, and you can look at the rest of the bill for the more and more spending.
According to Hatch’s claim, they can’t afford to help kids with cancer because the government is that broke—so what do they do? Collect less money from people who have more than they’ll ever know what to do with. In fact, the bill adds as much as $1.5 trillion to the debt. In comparison, CHIP needs $15 billion to operate—1% of how much we’ll be losing because of this tax plan.
