A federal court in Washington has blocked President Donald Trump from imposing the government’s policy on banning transgender Americans from serving in the military.
On July 26, Trump surprised the Pentagon and tweeted that he intended to reverse an Obama-era policy allowing transgender individuals to serve openly in the military.

He said he would order a return to the policy prior to June 2016, under which service members could be discharged for being transgender.
In August, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis announced that transgender troops would be allowed to stay in the military while experts studied issues surrounding their service.
U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly wrote Monday that Trump’s directive changing the transgender policy cannot be enforced while the case works its way through the court and that transgender members of the military who had sued over the change were likely to win their lawsuit.
The judge denied the plaintiff’s motion to block the ban on funds for gender reassignment surgery.
