Donald Trump’s Failed NFL Boycott Leads To The Most Watched Sunday Football In Seven Years

During a rally for Luther Strange on Friday night, President Trump started a culture war with the NFL. After calling peaceful protesters “sons of b*tches,” Trump called on his supporters to boycott the NFL. “When people like yourselves turn on television and you see those people taking the knee when they are playing our great national anthem – the only thing you could do better is if you see it, even if it’s one player, leave the stadium,” Trump said. “I guarantee things will stop.”

It didn’t work. The NFL’s ratings over the weekend were the best they’ve been in years. According to ESPN sports business reporter Darren Rovell, “Preliminary ratings for NFL games on CBS yesterday were UP 4% vs Week 3 of last year. Its pregame show had highest viewership in 7 YEARS.”

John Ourand of Sports Business Journal reports that the pregame shows on both Fox and CBS increased 19% as viewers tuned in to see what commentators had to say about Trump’s rant, such as Terry Bradshaw, who said, “If our country stands for anything, folks, it’s freedom. People died for that freedom. I’m not sure if our President understands those rights.”

Trump claims that the NFL ratings are at an all-time low, suggesting it’s because of players taking a knee during the national anthem, but PolitiFact, their ratings drop is similar to other sports that don’t demonstrate politics.

For whatever reason Trump decided to attack the NFL, his goal to make people stop watching football backfired completely. Instead, he actually got more Americans to tune in.
He’ll probably take credit for that too.
