Trump also asked the gathered reporters if there was a question for “the president,” pointing at Rajoy. The reporter who asked the next question addressed Rajoy as “prime minister.”
Even after meeting with Rajoy beforehand, Trump couldn’t seem to remember what the leader’s position was.
Trump first bungled Rajoy’s title while introducing him, and the Spanish prime minister seemed visibly perplexed, turning his head suddenly to stare at Trump.
The White House also called Rajoy Spain’s president in a tweet before the press conference:
Today President Trump welcomed President Mariano Rajoy of Spain to the White House.

This comes only a day after Trump couldn’t remember the name of the candidate running against Alabama Sen. Luther Strange in a primary vote happening Tuesday.
