Democrats Just Scored A Historic Victory In Louisiana

The wave of historic Democratic elections continues.

Tonight, Fox 8 called New Orleans’ mayoral election for Democrat LaToya Cantrell, making her the city’s first African American woman mayor ever.

“Almost 300 years, my friends, and New Orleans, we’re still making history,” Cantrell said in her victory speech.

The big win for Cantrell only strengthens the momentum Democrats are building going into the 2018 Congressional elections. On November 7, Seattle elected its first lesbian mayor; a Liberian refugee was elected mayor of Helena, Montana , and St. Paul, Minnesota voted in its first African-American mayor ever.

Cantrell, Louisiana, and the city of New Orleans have much to celebrate tonight — not only in the historical accomplishment but the future Democratic victories it portends.
