BREAKING: Mass Casualties After Gunman Opens Fire During Sunday Church Sermon

In a chilling reminder of the world that Republican gun nuts want for us, numerous people are dead after a gunman opened fire at a Baptist church in Sutherland Springs, Texas this Sunday morning. The gunman is dead, according to a reporter on the scene.

This incident comes just about one month after a gunman named Stephen Paddock opened fire on a country music festival in Las Vegas, killing nearly 60 people and wounding hundreds more. He fired on the crowd from an upper level room in a nearby hotel. There have been plenty of shooting incidents in between these two profile incidents.

There have been 307 total mass shootings this year, as tallied by the Gun Violence Archive.

Although someone on Twitter with apparent firsthand knowledge of the situation initially stated that “23-27 people” were down, it’s still not clear just how many have been killed or wounded in this shooting.

An MSNBC producer named Jesse Rodriguez initially reported on Twitter that a source in Texas had revealed to him that as many as 10-15 people are dead — before updating his reporting to state that “up to 24” people had been killed.

His update:

A CNN reporter added a report of three more casualties, bringing the total up to 27. Two dozen people are reported to have been wounded.

Normally 50 people attend services at the church in question, according to witnesses, and the shooter — who has yet to be identified — reportedly entered the building during services with an assault rifle.

Reports suggest that a two year old is among the victims.

There is no reason for civilians to have the kind of weapon allegedly used in this attack — and yet, thanks to Republicans in Congress, here we are.

As of about 1:45 PM local time, Trump has not yet responded to this incident, although Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who is a Republican, has.

He wrote on Twitter:

‘Our prayers are with all who were harmed by this evil act. Our thanks to law enforcement for their response. More details from DPS soon.’
